Physical Exam Q & A
Can I schedule a physical as a new patient?
Greenwich Primary Care is currently accepting new patients at both our Cos Cob and Stamford locations. For new patients seeking a physical, we require an initial meet and greet with the provider, during which necessary lab work will be ordered. Once the final results from the labs are received, the physical will be scheduled (4-5 days after) to ensure a thorough and complete assessment of your health.
What can I expect during a physical exam?
During a physical exam, you can expect a healthcare provider to assess your overall health by checking vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature. They will also examine your body systems (e.g., heart, lungs, abdomen, and reflexes) and may perform lab tests or screenings depending on your age and medical history. The exam may involve a discussion of your medical history, lifestyle, and any concerns you have.
Physicals may include any or all of the following:
- Neurological exam to check muscle strength and reflexes
- Weight check and body mass index (BMI) calculation
- Lung function test (spirometry)
- Blood pressure check
- Vision test (Snellen)
- Electrocardiogram (EKG)
- Skin check
Physical exams also include a comprehensive evaluation of your personal and family medical history. This information helps our providers determine if there are additional or outside screenings you may need, such as a mammogram.
How often do I need a physical exam?
In general, our providers recommends coming in to Greenwich Primary Care once a year around the same time for a physical exam. This checkup is a preventive care screening and is necessary even if you’re generally healthy and never seem to get sick.
If you have a chronic health issue, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, or if you’re older, you might need more frequent visits. For these situations, pur provieers might encourage you to come to the clinic for physicals twice a year or even quarterly.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for a physical exam?
It’s helpful to make a few preparations before your or your child’s upcoming physical exam at Greenwich Primary Care. If you’re new to the practice, for instance, try to request medical records from your previous primary care physician before your visit.
You should also:
- Write down all concerns, questions, or health changes
- Know the first day of your last menstrual period (if applicable)
- Make a note of any prescription or over-the-counter medications you take
Lastly, certain blood tests require a short period of fasting, often overnight. Usually, it’s just blood cholesterol or diabetes screenings that may require fasting. If you’re due for blood work, ask a team member if you need to fast beforehand.
Greenwich Primary Care offers comprehensive physical exams for every member of your family. You can book a physical online or by phone, or you can walk in during normal business hours.
